IMPLEMENTATION

The Cutting Back Screening and Brief Intervention (SBI) for Unhealthy Alcohol Use: A Step-By-Step Implementation Guide for Trauma Centers is designed to help you use this training, as well as other resources, to implement an alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) in your trauma center. It provides a practical, step-by-step process that trauma centers can use to meet the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT) requirement1 to provide alcohol SBI for patients in their trauma service.

The Cutting Back Implementation Guide is unique; it is linked to other Cutting Back resources to help lead staff through a consultative process with leaders and administrators to tailor SBI to the specific characteristics and demands of their trauma service. The guide was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with the ACS-COT to steer users through a practical, step-by-step, planning process that involves the people whose jobs will be affected so that both the staff and the institution own the program.

The guide presents information on how staff can learn to screen patients and provide screen-positive patients with brief interventions. It helps you to use this Cutting Back training, and other resources to help improve practitioner knowledge and skills and offers critical assistance on what should happen before and after staff learn new skills.
